The Alliance To End Plastic Waste

Given the intense negativity and recent demonization of plastic, the American Chemistry Council, the trade association for plastic manufacturers, turned to us for help. The challenge was to change the conversation from short-term, simplistic “solutions,” such as bans, to deeper discussions of long-term improvements.

Our solution was to do more than just make ads. We recommended action to solve the plastic waste problem head-on. Within a year, we launched the Alliance to End Plastic Waste with a commitment of $1.5 billion to end plastic waste in the environment. One of our first priorities? Cleaning up the 10 rivers that carry 80% of ocean-based plastics to sea.

Projects in Action

India is home to some of the most significant sources of unmanaged plastic waste worldwide. An estimated 1.2 billion pounds of plastic waste enter the Ganges River every year, which is one of ten global rivers transporting more than 80% of river-based plastics to the ocean.

Renew Oceans was the first Alliance backed project. On the banks of the Ganges River, we’re empowering and engaging the community – so that our biggest challenge becomes our biggest opportunity.
